Training at Southwest Tennessee Community College sits at the start of Kenneth Pogson’s record, and Voodoo Doughnut, founded in Portland in 2003, marks the work that followed. The line from school to shop is direct: learn the basics, build a business, and keep making doughnuts that push past plain utility. In that sense, Pogson’s career is defined less by movement than by persistence. The co-founder role, held since 2003, shows the kind of continuity that matters in pastry work: a format is set, then defended through repetition.

Today

Since 2003, Pogson has stayed with the shop in Portland, and the language around the work reflects a practical, low-ornament approach. “We’re pretty much still doing it,” he has said, which reads like a statement from someone who knows the labor is in the daily build. On the question of the doughnuts’ construction, his answer was just as direct: “Took as many toppings as I possibly could.” That same impulse shows up in the way he lists components: “Cereals, sugar dust, cotton candy, sugars, anything, Oreos, bacon.” Read as a craft note, it describes a method built on accumulation, contrast, and deliberate excess. At Voodoo Doughnut, that kind of layering is not decoration added at the end; it is the point of the format.

Recognition

The Portland Cream is his named signature work: a raised shell filled with Bavarian cream, finished with chocolate and a set of eyes.
