In Kerem Baki’s case, experience at Hillsborough Vineyards sits inside that reality: rainfall, enough to set the pace of the vineyard, and enough to keep a winemaker making decisions season by season. Today

Ownership and board service put Kerem Baki in two parts of the state wine trade at once: Hillsborough Winery on the production side, and the Virginia Wine Board on the strategic side. That combination places the work in both cellar and policy, where the business of Virginia wine gets shaped as much by practical decisions as by long-range direction. His own shorthand for the region is direct: “We consider ourselves DC’s wine country.” The point is clear enough; Virginia is being positioned not as a peripheral market, but as part of a larger wine conversation. He is equally plain about the climate that frames the work: “This is Virginia, we have 30 to 40 inches of rain per year.”
