Microbiology at the University of Virginia gave Kirsty Harmon a working view of fermentation before she ever made wine for a living. That lab background, followed by time as an event planner, pushed her toward the practical side of production: timing, presentation, and the management of moving parts. When she entered the cellar as a winery apprentice at Kluge Estate Winery, that mix of scientific discipline and hospitality translated into a tighter read on process. By the time she was making Painted Red and Painted White in Virginia, the work had already settled into a balance of rigor and imagination.

Where They Are Now

Winemaking at the Charlottesville estate has been Harmon’s center since 2008, with the added scope of having served as general manager. That combination places her inside both the cellar and the broader structure around the wines, where consistency has to hold alongside creative range. Painted Red and Painted White, the annual limited-edition wines, show how she uses those roles: as releases shaped by winemaking, music, and visual storytelling, they are built to carry more than one kind of context at once.
