At California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Kristin Bryden established the technical groundwork that would later meet cellar and vineyard work. In 2011, she took a seasonal position at Wild Horse Winery, where harvest pace and daily repetition formed an early test of consistency. From there, she moved into production at Lockwood Vineyards in San Lucas and then into the role of assistant winemaker. Each step added responsibility and sharpened the same core skill: reading a vintage as it moves. By 2016, Bryden had become winemaker at Zaca Mesa Winery & Vineyards, a post she held through 2021. That span put her inside a winery with its own standards and demands, and gave her room to work within them. Since 2021, as General Manager and winemaker at Zaca Mesa Winery & Vineyard, she has carried that same measured approach into a broader remit.

Where They Are Now

At Zaca Mesa, Bryden works across Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon, each variety asking for its own timing and handling. The role spans cellar decisions and winery oversight, with the work tied to both production and the larger shape of the house. She also makes Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for Tread Wines, extending that same attention to detail beyond one label.

In Their Words “It takes a long time to learn a vineyard.” Kristin Bryden’s line gets to the pace of the work.
