i. Biography
Leon Webb works from the grain forward. At Shelter Point Distillery in Oyster River, his starting point is the field, where the raw material sets the terms for everything that follows. “Field-to-flask is the journey of our grain” is the line he uses, and it fits a distiller who treats the finished spirit as the result of a longer sequence of decisions, not a single act. His training at Heriot-Watt University and his time across Shelter Point Distillery and Tamnavulin Distillery place him in a line of work shaped by place, process, and consistency.
The Path
Training at Heriot-Watt University gave Leon Webb a formal base before he moved into distilling roles at Shelter Point Distillery on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. There, his work as Master Distiller and blender until 2022 sat close to the core tasks of the trade: shaping spirit, balancing components, and making the quiet adjustments that define character over time. Since 2019, his role as distiller at Shelter Point Distillery has also kept him tied to a site where coastal conditions and grain remain central to the work. Since 2022, the same discipline has continued in the role of Distillery Manager at Tamnavulin Distillery. The title changes, but the craft question stays familiar: how to hold process steady, keep attention on detail, and manage a distillery without losing sight of what the spirit needs from each stage.
The Work Today
His current role at Tamnavulin Distillery in Speyside, part of the Whyte & Mackay family, places him in another distilling environment with its own pace and demands.
Acclaim
The span of Leon Webb’s work across Shelter Point Distillery and Tamnavulin Distillery shows a distilling career built through responsibility rather than title alone. Master Distiller and blender, distiller, and Distillery Manager each point to a different point in the process, but the through-line is the same: grain-led thinking, operational control, and a working knowledge of how distilling changes from site to site. At Shelter Point Distillery in Oyster River and now at Tamnavulin Distillery in Speyside, the craft remains the focus.
