i. Biography
Lisa Ludwinski is the Pastry Chef and owner of Sister Pie in Detroit, a position built on exacting technique, patience, and a clear eye for what humble ingredients can do in the right hands. Her path to that role moved through Kalamazoo College in 2006, then through kitchens that sharpened her pace and standards. She worked at Milk Bar and staged at Avalon International Breads in Detroit, where repetition, timing, and consistency were part of the job. In 2012, she founded and began operating Sister Pie in Milford, establishing the business that would carry her work forward.
Coming Up
Kalamazoo College in 2006 gave Lisa Ludwinski the first structure for the work that followed. The value of that early period was in the discipline it asked for: learning how to think clearly, how to work steadily, and how to move ideas into practice. Milk Bar and a stage at Avalon International Breads in Detroit added more kitchen time, with the usual demands of professional pastry—repetition, teamwork, timing, and follow-through. By the time she founded Sister Pie in Milford in 2012, those experiences had already formed a working point of view, one grounded in craft and built through repetition.
Where They Are Now
Lisa Ludwinski now leads Sister Pie as Pastry Chef and owner, keeping the Detroit shop aligned with the standards that shaped her earlier training and shop experience. Her role sits where hospitality meets technical control, and the work depends on consistency as much as on invention. On the subject of women in the industry, she has said, "Because really, anything we do in our lives is still under a different scrutiny than it would be for a man." The line captures the reality of visibility and authority in the trade. Her path shows a maker intent on holding that ground on her own terms.
Signature
Lisa's signature dishes include Triple Chocolate Cookies. The name points to a pastry approach that relies on directness and specificity: a cookie built to be rich, familiar, and memorable without needing embellishment.
