The Path
Training in Champagne and Burgundy gives Luc Morlet a vocabulary that shows up later in the glass: technical grounding, regional range, and the discipline to work with site rather than flatten it. At Rheims University in Champagne, Ecole Viticole de Champagne, and Dijon Business School in Burgundy, Morlet built the kind of base that lets a winemaker move between structure, balance, and commercial judgment without losing the thread of the work. That discipline was tested in roles across Champagne, Bordeaux, and Sonoma County. As technical director at Pierre Morlet et Fils in Champagne, then as régisseur (winemaker) at Château Dauzac in Margaux (from 1994), and later as winemaker at Peter Michael Winery in Sonoma County (2001–2005), Morlet worked in different registers of fine wine production. The sequence matters: each post added another layer of practical knowledge, from the measured architecture of Champagne to the precision expected in Margaux and the expressive demands of Sonoma County. Today, Luc is winemaker and co-founder of Morlet Family Vineyards.
The Work Today
Single-vineyard wine is where Morlet’s work comes into focus. Since 2006, Luc Morlet has served as winemaker and co-founder of Morlet Family Vineyards, shaping bottlings that aim for precision and depth without sanding away the character of the site. The emphasis is on specificity: vineyard identity, vintage variation, and the grain of place that survives when the winemaker resists the urge to standardize everything into one house profile. The method is stated plainly by Morlet himself: “by harmoniously blending farming, science, and art, I aim to express both the terroir of each vineyard site as well as the unique characteristics of every vintage.” That framing puts farming first and treats science and art as working partners, not opposites. It also places the winemaker’s job where it belongs in the trade: to clarify what the vineyard already gives, rather than to overstate it.
