The Climb
Luisella Benedetti’s route into wine did not begin in a cellar or among the vines, but in the financial sector, a background that gave her first working years a disciplined, structured footing. It is a starting point that reads almost as a counterpoint to the world she now inhabits: one ruled less by quarterly precision than by seasons, patience, and the slow intelligence of a vineyard coming into itself. From that early foundation, her path has unfolded in a concise and deliberate arc, the sort that feels measured at every turn.
Today
Benedetti is owner of Ancilla Lugana - Azienda Agricola La Ghidina and winemaker of Ancilla Lugana, both in Dossobuono di Villafranca, Italy. Her work is centered entirely on Lugana wines, and the rhythm of her estate reflects a conviction that time is not an obstacle but an ingredient. “As a philosophy, we release the new vintage very late, because wine needs its own time and should not be rushed.” In that sentence, the estate’s character becomes clear: restrained, confident, and unwilling to force what can only be revealed gradually. That philosophy takes its most tangible shape in two wines. The 2009 signature work, *Ancilla*, is her superior wine, made from vineyards aged about 15 to 18 years. It is the kind of bottle that seems to carry the full density of its setting, a wine whose identity is bound to maturity, structure, and the patient accumulation of character. The 2010 *Ella* is the youngest wine, named because her name is Luisella and she is the youngest in the family. In that naming, the personal and the familial sit close to the surface, making the estate feel intimate even as it remains firmly rooted in craft and rigor. The present tense of Benedetti’s work is thus remarkably focused. She is not moving across categories or chasing breadth for its own sake; instead, she is working within a single field, drawing everything toward Lugana. “I produce only and exclusively Lugana as the type of wine.” The line is spare, but it suggests a philosophy with real force behind it: specialization as devotion, and continuity as a form of identity. Her role as owner and winemaker gives that commitment a fully lived shape, while the family line behind the estate lends it a quiet sense of inheritance.
