Coming Up
Oenological School of Alba gave Marco Bonfante the technical base that still shows in his work: close attention to vineyard and cellar, and to the decisions that separate a sound wine from one with real presence. Since 2000, Marco Bonfante has been wine maker and production and management lead of Marco Bonfante in Nizza Monferrato, Piedmont, Italy, a position that requires more than palate alone. The job sits at the point where judgment, patience, and consistency have to hold across seasons and style.
Where They Are Now
That same post still anchors the work in Piedmont, where Marco Bonfante keeps the house moving between inherited practice and selective change. Albarossa became a point of focus in September 2004, when he came across the grape and, in his words, “immediately fell in love with it.” For a maker already tuned to regional possibilities, that response marks a practical recognition: a grape that could open another line of work without leaving the territory behind. Albarossa also clarified the kind of red he wanted to make. “I wanted to produce a wine that was different from the reds that are traditionally made in Piedmont,” he said, framing difference as a matter of place rather than rupture. The technical questions he raised point to the mechanics behind that decision: appassimento, harvest timing, and the choice of containers and ventilation systems. Those are the levers that shape concentration, balance, and finish before the wine ever reaches bottle.
In Their Words “I wanted to find out about the techniques for drying the grapes (appassimento), the right time to harvest, and what were the most suitable containers and ventilation systems.” “I wanted to produce a wine that was different from the reds that are traditionally made in Piedmont.”
