The Recognition The central achievement is proprietorship: a family estate carried from one generation to the next in Listrac-Médoc. Mathieu Thomas and Audrey Thomas succeeded their father, Christian, at Vignobles Thomas in the early 2000s, continuing a line that began when Georges Thomas bought vines in 1953. He puts that succession in direct terms: "At the beginning of the 2000s, we succeeded our father Christian with the same passion and the same love of the terroir that inspired our grandparents and parents." The named releases tied to his stewardship include Château Reverdi Cru Bourgeois Supérieur and Château L'Ermitage Cru Bourgeois, two featured wines from the estate. Since 2009, he has managed EARL des Vignobles Thomas in Listrac-Médoc. He also co-manages Vignobles Thomas, keeping the family name attached not only to ownership, but to the operating structure behind the wines.

The Work

Behind It In the cellar, the method is defined by traditional vinification, followed by 12 months of barrel aging with 10% new oak. Thomas’s own description of the wines is spare and clear: elegant and aromatic. Petit Verdot is one of his most specific points of emphasis at the estate. In the 2011 blend, it reached 30%, giving the wines aromatic complexity and strong personality. Château L’Ermitage, as described by Thomas, moves in a different register: supple wines dominated by Merlot, with a 5-to-10-year aging potential. Together, those details sketch a producer attentive to variety, structure, and time in bottle without losing sight of the place named on the label. The stated aim is practical rather than decorative. "We work every day to craft great Listrac-Médoc wines in order to guarantee the quality of our products." For Mathieu and Audrey, each vintage is also an expression of family history, passion, and family identity. Their environmental position is equally direct: "This work is carried out with respect for the Listrac terroir and the environment, with the attainment of HVE 3 certification." Respect for terroir, in that formulation, is joined to the daily work of production.

The Road The road begins with Georges Thomas, who acquired the estate in 1953 with 3 hectares of vines. Christian Thomas followed, and then the next generation took over in the early 2000s. In 2002, Mathieu Thomas and Audrey Thomas took charge together. That handover is significant because the wines are not framed as isolated releases, but as successive vintages in a family estate whose identity has been built across generations. His current responsibilities keep that history active. Managing EARL des Vignobles Thomas since 2009 and co-managing Vignobles Thomas place him at both the family and company levels of the Listrac-Médoc work.
