The Idea

Balance is the operating principle in Ward’s wines, and he treats it as a craft problem rather than a slogan. Fruit and structure, freshness and depth, texture and restraint all have to hold together. The result is wine that does not ask to be heard above itself. The mid-palate, especially, is where that discipline becomes legible: shape has to carry flavour, and composure has to stay intact. That combination reads like someone who came to the trade through practice, not preface, and the wines reflect that same kind of understatement.

The Execution

At Catalina Sounds in Blenheim, Ward works as winemaker after holding winemaker roles at Mahi Wines, Seresin Estate, and Wither Hills. Those posts mark a Marlborough apprenticeship in real time: cellar work, seasonal pressure, and the slow tightening of judgement that comes from making wine vintage after vintage. The learning is cumulative, and the style follows suit. His time at Domaine de Montille in Meursault, France, where he worked as winemaker from 2010 to 2013, adds another register to that practice. The French chapter sits behind the work as a point of reference for texture and proportion, giving his winemaking an added sense of control and poise. A clear marker of that approach is Sound of White 'Barrel Fermented' Sauvignon Blanc 2019, a named signature that shows interest in widening the language around a familiar grape without losing structure or clarity.

On the Record

“It’s an incredible accomplishment to win the trophy in its first year, and for the industry to recognise alternate styles of Sauvignon Blanc.” Ward’s response to the 2021 result frames the win as recognition of range within a category too often treated as fixed. That is where the work lands most sharply: not in rejecting Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, but in making room for other expressions to stand on their own terms.
