    Portrait of Matthias Hey

    i. Biography

Matthias Hey has worked as winemaker at Weingut Hey in Naumburg, Germany, since 2008. The position sits at the point where inheritance, site, and discipline meet: oenology in Geisenheim on one side, a family estate in Naumburg on the other. “Instead of studying philosophy, I studied oenology in Geisenheim.” The line is plain, but it lands where many producers work best — with craft as a way of thinking, and with the cellar as the place where that thinking is made usable.

    The Climb

Geisenheim University in 2008 gave Matthias Hey the technical base to turn judgment into method, and from there he moved straight into the work at Weingut Hey in Naumburg. That same year marked the start of his role as winemaker, which became the center of his professional practice. The estate story predates the appointment: his parents bought the estate and a neglected parcel in Naumburg's Steinmeister in 2001. Without that coincidence, he says, he does not know what he would be doing today. In trade terms, it is a useful reminder that vineyards are often as much found as they are made, and that a site can alter the shape of a cellar’s future.

    Today

Hey’s wines are described as finesse-driven, nuanced, and precise, which points to a cellar approach built around control rather than force. The Grosse Gewächse carry plenty of extract and a powerful, mineral character, while the estate’s other wines are described as elegant, finely defined, with clear fruit and mineral flavor. Taken together, the work sits in a register that favors brightness, structure, and definition. The style reads as measured: enough weight for depth, enough restraint to keep the vineyard legible.
