The Climb
An internship at Comtes Lafon in Meursault, Burgundy, gave Meike Näkel an early grounding in one of wine’s most closely watched regions. In that setting, precision and patience were not abstract virtues but working requirements, and the discipline of protecting a wine’s character took shape through daily practice. The result is a style of attention that reads less as flourish than as method: place first, then the work of keeping it intact. At Weingut Meyer-Näkel, that training sits inside a family estate closely associated with the Ahr. As winemaker, Meike Näkel works from a position where continuity matters as much as change, carrying forward an established name through the repeated demands of vineyard and cellar.
Today
The work is anchored in the vineyard and cellar, but its reach extends to the larger task of holding a region’s identity in the bottle. In the Ahr, where steep slopes and difficult terrain set the pace, each decision carries weight beyond a single vintage.
Signature
Meike Näkel’s signature wines include Spätburgunder «S», Grauwacke Ahrweiler Spätburgunder, Ahrweiler Daubhaus Spätburgunder, and 2023 Hand Grauburgunder. Read together, they show a range built around site, texture, and restraint, with each label tied back to a specific place or line of work. The names do the locating; the wines do the rest.
In Their Words “I hope that there will be a swift reconstruction in the Ahr Valley — and that everyone who lives here is motivated to continue to cherish and care for this cultural landscape with its fantastic steep slopes.” The Ahr Valley here is framed as working ground and shared responsibility: a cultural landscape that depends on care, not just admiration. The steep slopes are part of the brief, and stewardship is treated as part of the job. “It was a very old tree which had extremely deep roots. Perhaps our great-grandfather planted that tree just for us to grab one hundred years later.” The tree stands in for inheritance as something still active, with roots that run backward and a harvest imagined across generations. What was planted long before remains available now, provided the work of tending it continues.
