Born in England in 1932, Batterberry built a career that moved into the main centers of American dining and publishing. In 1978, he co-founded Food & Wine, a leading consumer publication that helped register the moment when culinary curiosity was moving from the margins into the mainstream. The magazine served that shift by giving readers a sharper vocabulary for taste, travel, and the pleasures of the table. In 1988, Batterberry co-founded Food Arts and took on the combined roles of editor-in-chief and publisher.
