The Climb

Winemaking foundations were laid at Charles Sturt University, then tested in season work at Wynns Coonawarra Estate in Coonawarra, where Michael Marcus started as a vintage cellar-hand. From there, his work moved through winery roles at Wynns in Coonawarra, then into the wine industry at Lindemans in Griffith and Mildura, before continuing with a winery role at Katnook Estate in Coonawarra. Since 2008, Marcus has been winemaker of Majella Wines. In a craft built on repetition and comparison, that kind of tenure matters. The Malleea is a Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz blend that the winery says continues the great Australian tradition. In Their Words “Each vintage is different, and I think that’s what makes winemaking an interesting job – even the more challenging vintages are fun!” That line gets to the practical appeal of the work: seasons change, problems change, and the job stays engaging because the response has to change with them. In winemaking, uncertainty is part of the brief. “I really enjoy Coonawarra shiraz – it has an elegance and expression of fruit that I think is quite special.” Marcus names the qualities that matter to him in the glass: elegance, expression, and fruit that registers as distinctive rather than merely generous.
