That timing placed him in a region still defining itself, bottle by bottle. The early years there meant working with place as a practical problem, and with patience as a working tool. He later served as head winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle until 1999, a long run that tightened his discipline around scale, precision, and consistency. 1999 marked a change in role, not a change in standards. Mike Januik became winemaker at Novelty Hill from 1999, and also took on the dual responsibility of winemaker and owner at Januik Winery in Woodinville. The pairing joined cellar work with stewardship of the label itself. Since then, the shape of the career has stayed clear: make the wine, carry the responsibility, keep the process measured.
