i. Biography
Mike Miyamoto’s career sits inside the working systems of Japanese whisky: distillation, cask handling, blending, and the public translation of all three. At Suntory, his path moved from the distillery floor to cooperage and cask procurement, then into the blender’s room, and later into leadership roles across Japan, the United States, London, and Scotland. The through line is technical breadth, built over time, with Japanese whisky as the constant center of gravity.
The Climb
Mike Miyamoto began at Suntory in Yamazaki Distillery (1978–1980), a first placement in one of the places that shaped his professional frame. He then moved into cooperage and cask procurement at Suntory in United States (1980–1985), work that required attention to wood, supply, and the conditions that support long maturation. From there, he joined the blender's room staff at Suntory in Hakushu Distillery (1985–1990), where the craft turns on calibration, comparison, and the judgment needed to bring components into balance. An overseas assignment at Suntory in London (1990–1994) widened the scope of that work and shifted it into an international context. He then became production director at Morrison Bowmore Distillers (1994–1999), before returning to Suntory as general manager / whisky blender at Suntory in Tokyo (1999–2001) and then executive general manager at Suntory in Hakushu Distillery (2001–2002). Those roles kept him close to the practical and managerial sides of whisky making, moving between oversight and the hands-on logic of production. His career continued in Scotland, where he served as deputy managing director at Morrison Bowmore Distillers in Scotland (2002–2004). He later returned once more to Suntory as executive general manager at Suntory in Yamazaki Distillery (2004–2010), closing a loop that began at the same distillery decades earlier. Since 2014, he has been global brand ambassador at Suntory, drawing on those years in production, blending, and management to speak for the house in public.
Today
He serves as global brand ambassador at Suntory. The role places Japanese whisky in front of a wider audience, but it rests on work done in still rooms, warehouses, and blending spaces. Miyamoto’s public position is rooted in the same disciplines that shaped his earlier posts: distillation, cask work, blending, and the institutional memory of Suntory.
