Formal academic training at Harvard University and University of San Francisco preceded Nancy Fraley’s first spirits work, but the craft education became practical at Germain-Robin Distillery. Legal and marketing work there put her near the commercial and structural side of a small spirits house; production work brought the learning closer to material, process, aging spirit, and the patience required when character is built over time rather than declared in advance. Research in American spirits requires both a sensory vocabulary and a working view of how producers make decisions. As director of research at American Distilling Institute, Fraley worked inside that broader knowledge base, where finished bottles are understood as the result of prior choices in production, maturation, and blending rather than as isolated products. Blending at scale depends on reading components for what they can do in relation to one another. As Master Blender at Jos. A. Magnus & Co. (2014–2026), Fraley’s work sat in that discipline: assessing contribution, structure, finish, and fit.

Where They Are Now

Nosing Services in Berkeley, California, United States, is built around consulting work for distilleries in custom blending, product formulation, maturation program development, and sensory analysis. In that practice, the nose is a technical instrument.
