i. Biography
Coming Up
Whiskey production rewards long memory, tight process control, and a palate that can stay consistent across years. Noel Sweeney’s early work reflected that: he began in 1989 as Quality Control Manager at Cooley Distillery, then moved through the technical side of the house to become Master Blender and Chief Distiller at Cooley until 2017. He also served as chairman of the Technical Committee at Irish Whiskey Association Technical Committee, where standards and method sit close to the centre of the work. The thread through that record is craft discipline: checking, calibrating, and protecting the technical base behind the bottle. In 2017, Sweeney brought that experience to Powerscourt Distillery as Founding Master Distiller and blender, helping establish a new identity from the ground up. He is now Master Distiller of Powerscourt Distillery Ltd, a role that keeps continuity and change working side by side.
Where They Are Now
Irish Whiskey remains the main field, and Sweeney’s recent work has been expressed through Fercullen. The releases came in sequence and with clear intent. In 2018 came Fercullen 8YO Blend, Fercullen 10YO Grain, and Fercullen 14YO Single Malt. In 2019, the distillery released Fercullen 18-Year-Old Single Malt. Then, in 2020, Fercullen Five Elements 18YO Single Malt arrived as a limited release of 1,500 bottles shaped by American white oak and European oak maturation and red wine, ruby port, and rum finishes. The technical problem, as Sweeney frames it, is not simply how to make whiskey correctly, but how to make a style that reads as its own thing. His line is direct: “The distiller's challenge nowadays is to produce a style.” That concern shows in the work itself, where structure, character, and recognisability have to land together.
Signature
Noel's signature wines include Fercullen Five Elements 18YO Single Malt, Fercullen 18-Year-Old Single Malt, Fercullen 8YO Blend, Fercullen 10YO Grain, and Fercullen 14YO Single Malt. Together, they show the Powerscourt approach: measured, layered, and attentive to what time, wood, and blending choices can bring forward.
In Their Words “I am proud to be part of an innovative wave that moved Irish Whiskey beyond just triple distilled, non-peated expressions.” “Since I started in the industry, Irish Whiskey has been turned on its head.”
