i. Biography
Peter Granoff is a Master Sommelier whose work centers on speaking, wine education, and wine competition judging. In a trade that can reward accumulation over clarity, his practice has been the craft of interpretation: making wine legible, durable in memory, and usable to the people listening across a table, in a classroom, or on a judging panel.
The Path
The director of f&b role at The Stanford Court Hotel / Stouffer Hotels in Nob Hill, San Francisco, gave Peter Granoff a working ground where service, cellar knowledge, and hospitality operations had to stay aligned. He remained there until 1988, in a setting defined by polish and pace, where the job was less about a single specialty than about keeping many moving parts in sync. In 1995, Peter Granoff helped launch Virtual Vineyards at Virtual Vineyards, a move that points to an early stretch of experimentation in wine access and education. The name marks a period when wine conversation was beginning to move beyond the conventional dining room and into new forms of reach. Today, Peter Granoff is adjunct member of the faculty of Culinary Institute of America's Professional Wine Studies program and judge of USA Wine Ratings. Both roles depend on discernment and communication: teaching others how to read what is in the glass, how to assess it, and how to explain that assessment without losing precision.
The Work Today
Speaker, wine educator, and wine competition judge are the three registers that define Peter Granoff’s present work. Each asks for a different kind of control: stage presence for speaking, patience for instruction, and close attention to nuance for judging. What holds them together is fluency, the ability to move between technical knowledge and clear delivery without flattening either. In those settings, Peter Granoff’s authority reads as practiced rather than performed. Wine rewards rigor and pleasure in equal measure, and his work sits where those two demands meet. Whether he is addressing an audience, guiding students, or evaluating wines in competition, the task is to bring structure to complexity and confidence to conversation.
