Soil study is a practical starting point for Cabernet work when the aim is to read site before style. Philippe Melka’s formation in Bordeaux, France, included a geology degree from the University of Bordeaux in 1989 and research-intern work studying soils at Château Haut Brion. The technical premise was set early: the ground was not background material, but primary information. Terroir, in this register, is not a slogan. In Melka’s French-American winemaking practice, Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet blends are approached through strata, exposure, and vineyard difference.
