Joe Harden

The Path

Formal training at University of Notre Dame and University of California, Davis gave the craft a technical and disciplined base before Joe Harden entered winery work. A professional basketball role at Santa Cruz Warriors came first; the move into wine then ran through Robert Mondavi Winery, where he began as an intern and later worked as a Bordeaux winemaker. The current work is split across two Napa roles: Joe is winemaker of Nickel & Nickel and winemaker of Brand Napa Valley.

The Work Today

Today, Harden is winemaker at Brand Napa Valley in St. Helena, United States. Single-vineyard Cabernet requires a narrow frame and a clear reading of site. Harden’s work includes two dozen single-vineyard, 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignons, a structure that keeps the vineyard as the unit of meaning rather than folding the material into a broader blended statement. The handling is directed toward legibility: Cabernet Sauvignon from individual vineyards, bottled with each site asked to stand on its own terms. The working standard is practical and table-facing, stated without abstraction: "My winemaking philosophy is all about making wines that I am proud to share with family and friends."
