Why Dana Estates belongs on a serious Napa itinerary
Dana Estates is a private Rutherford winery at 1500 Whitehall Lane, reached through Helms Vineyard at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains. The arrival is unusually atmospheric: running water and classical music carry across the courtyard before the vine-covered walls of the 1883 H.W. Helms winery fully come into view. The estate is intimate, highly considered and particularly compelling for travelers who care equally about architecture, vineyard detail and small-production Cabernet.
The 1883 ruins and Howard Backen’s restoration
The modern estate preserves the stone remains of the H.W. Helms ghost winery rather than treating them as a decorative backdrop. Howard Backen integrated the original masonry with a working production facility, a tall stone salon, a circular lotus library and a reclaimed barn. The result feels historic without becoming museum-like: old walls and timber retain their age while the contemporary interventions stay quiet enough to serve the site.
Maura Johnson, Philippe Melka and site-specific winemaking
Maura Johnson is Director of Winemaking, with Philippe Melka consulting since the inaugural vintage. The cellar does not force every vineyard through one recipe. Helms Vineyard Cabernet ferments in upright Taransaud oak; Lotus Vineyard uses concrete; and the Sauvignon Blanc program uses elongated cigar barrels to build texture. The estate’s severe barrel selection means only a small number of lots ultimately receive the DANA label.
DANA, ONDA and VASO
The portfolio moves through three distinct lenses. VASO is the broadest introduction. ONDA composes Cabernet across Napa sites. DANA isolates individual vineyards, with the current estate portfolio highlighting Helms in Rutherford, Lotus in Crystal Springs, Hershey on Howell Mountain and Montagna on Pritchard Hill. The contrast between Helms and Lotus is especially instructive: Helms emphasizes perfume and Rutherford’s fine cocoa-like tannin, while Lotus is broader, darker and more powerful.
How to visit Dana Estates
Dana Estates is not a walk-in tasting room. The publicly offered Dana Estates Portfolio Exploration includes both ONDA and DANA, is $250 per person, is described as a private, 90-minute tour and tasting at the historic property, and can be reserved through Tock. The all DANA flight, Terroir Collection Tasting, is $500 per person. Collectors interested in a DANA-focused appointment or a deeper single-vineyard format should inquire directly with the estate when booking.
