The Execution

Before Artezin Wines, Johnson was winemaker at The Hess Collection from 1983 to 2002, a long stretch that gives shape to the Napa portion of his career. From there, the move to Artezin Wines in 2002 marks not a break so much as a continuation, with the same seriousness applied to a different setting and a similarly grounded set of grapes. The career also includes work at Souverain Winery and Mayacamas Vineyards. Those names widen the frame, placing Johnson within a California wine landscape defined by established estates and by the patient accumulation of experience. Nothing in that path is rushed. Instead, the years and places read like a steady ascent through work that depends on repetition, judgment, and a willingness to be exact about the small things.
