The Path

The discipline here is continuity: starting on the floor, staying close to the bottle, and building authority through repetition. Sally Mohr began at The Boulder Wine Merchant in 1983 as an employee, learning the mechanics of service, selection, and the daily work of guiding drinkers through regions and styles. In 1986, that relationship to the shop deepened into ownership when she became co-owner of The Boulder Wine Merchant, keeping her practice rooted in the same place while widening her responsibility. The scope later extended beyond retail without leaving the trade behind. By 2010, Sally Mohr was serving as a master level examiner and educator at the Court of Master Sommeliers, a role that depends on technical accuracy and the ability to make that knowledge usable for others. She also serves as a board member of Sake Education Council and as a consultant providing staff training and wine list development of Boulder and Denver area restaurants. Across those positions, the common work is translation: turning experience into instruction, and instruction into something a team can use.

The Work Today

The shop remains part of the structure of the work, and since 2010 she has continued as a master level examiner and educator at the Court of Master Sommeliers. That combination puts judgment, memory, and vocabulary at the center of the day. Mohr’s tasting language is direct and specific, built from close attention to what the wine is actually doing in the glass. “I get more of the wood notes, just kind of that tiny bit of black pepper, but I just feel like I’m in the lumber yard.” The line shows a palate working in layers, not generalities. That same calibration carries into evaluation and consulting. Her observations move quickly from first impression to a clearer read on fruit, texture, and distinction. “Oh wow. I was not expecting that much of a difference in fruit. This is more red plums and red berries.” It is the language of someone trained to separate one expression from another and to make that distinction practical for students, staff, and lists alike.
