Food-systems work can start on the line and extend into policy, media, consumer technology, and investment without leaving the trade questions behind: labor, access, nutrition, adoption, and the way people actually cook and eat. That same systems register carries through Sam Kass’s role as Venture Partner at Acre Venture Partners.
The Path
Kitchen training and institutional food work sit on the same continuum here. Sam Kass trained at Kansas City Kansas Community College and Triton College, then entered Chicago kitchens as a restaurant worker under chef Dean Zanella at 312 Chicago before sharpening his craft as a trainee under chef Christian Domschitz in Vienna, Austria (2003). He returned to Chicago as a restaurant worker under executive chef Paul Kahan at Avec in Chicago (from 2006), founded Inevitable Table in Chicago (from 2007), and served as personal chef at Obama family (until 2009). His work then moved to Washington, D.C, where he was Food Initiative Coordinator at White House Office / Office of the First Lady in Washington, D.C. (2009–2014), Assistant Chef at White House in Washington, D.C. (2009–2014), Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives at White House in Washington, D.C. (2010–2014), chef, inaugural class at American Chef Corps (from 2012), Executive Director at Let's Move! Campaign in Washington, D.C. (2013–2014), and Senior Policy Advisor for Nutrition Policy at White House in Washington, D.C. (2013–2014). The later phase moved the same food-systems practice into media, research, consumer platforms, and venture work. In 2015, Kass widened his orbit as partner at Sprig in San Francisco Bay Area (from 2015) and Director's Fellow at MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts (from 2015). Today, Sam is Senior Food Analyst of NBC News (since 2015), founder of TROVE (since 2016), Chief Consumer Experience Officer of Innit, Inc. (since 2016), and partner of Acre Venture Partners (since 2016).
The Work Today
Food analysis for a national audience requires translation without flattening the subject: nutrition, access, public health, and consumer behavior have to be made legible outside the kitchen while still respecting how food is produced and used. Since 2015, Kass has served as Senior Food Analyst at NBC News, working in that register. He founded TROVE, adding another strand to a career that has moved between kitchens, institutions, media, and food-focused ventures. Consumer technology and investment bring a different set of craft questions: what changes home practice, what supports better choices, and what food companies can scale without losing the use case. In 2016, he became Chief Consumer Experience Officer at Innit. His affiliations also include MIT Media Lab fellow.
