i. Biography
Coming Up
Precision came into Sean Harrison’s distilling long before Plymouth Gin did. As a Royal Navy officer and lieutenant until 1994, he worked in a system built on rhythm, duty and exact procedure — habits that later fit the care required to hold a historic gin to a fixed standard. At Plymouth Gin in Plymouth, England, the task was preservation rather than invention. Harrison arrived as Assistant Manager in 1994, then became Distillery Manager from 1996–1999, and Master Distiller from 1999. The house was old and the brief was clear: protect the character of one gin while the category kept moving.
Where They Are Now
Continuity is the core discipline in Harrison’s work at Plymouth Gin. In a market that often rewards novelty, his focus has remained on keeping the same style, the same flavour profile and the same quality intact. Plymouth Gin, as Harrison describes it, is built from seven botanicals and moves from strong citrus at the start to gentle, smooth earthy notes at the finish. Adjustment, when it comes, is measured. Harrison said, “For me, the gin worked best at between 41 and 43%,” adding, “It gave it a nice balance between flavour and alcohol.” The point is calibration, not reinvention: a small change made to preserve the shape of the whole. Plymouth Navy Strength Gin sits within that same logic of preservation. Re-released at 114 proof as part of the brand's revival, it required the old name to return without losing the identity attached to it. Harrison’s work reads as stewardship in the trade sense — keeping a classic legible, stable and recognisable.
