    Portrait of Sergio Montiel

    i. Biography

Sergio Montiel built his reputation through cellar work across different addresses, moving vintage by vintage and learning how each site asked for a different reading of fruit, timing, and restraint. His current roles place that background in two settings: Head Winemaker at Grupo Salute in Las Heras, Argentina, and Co-founder and Winemaker at Bonomo & Montiel in Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina. The throughline is craft applied steadily, with each cellar adding another layer to his way of working. Early work as winemaker at boutique wineries at Dolium, Piattelli Vineyards, Bodega Calle, Las Piedras Pura Vid and Martino Wines gave Sergio Montiel a practical education in how cellar decisions and vineyard expression shape a finished wine. Those years formed the technical discipline behind his later roles, with the work centered on observation, seasonal rhythm, and adjustment rather than force. Since 2019, he has served as Head Winemaker of Grupo Salute, where that accumulated experience now supports the larger structure of the house. His role as co-founder and winemaker at Bonomo & Montiel adds a more personal register, rooted in Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina, and in the precise decisions that define a project’s own voice. At Grupo Salute in Las Heras, Argentina, Sergio Montiel holds the Head Winemaker role that carries responsibility for consistency, balance, and identity. The work sits in the background of the finished wine, but it is what gives the glass a clear line from cellar to bottle. At Bonomo & Montiel in Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina, he works as co-founder and winemaker. That dual role places him on both sides of the craft: shaping the direction of the project while also making the decisions that give it form. Sergio's signature wines include Conejo Negro, Hábito Wines, and Bonomo & Montiel. Together, they point to a style built on attention and control, with the emphasis on getting the work right before the wine reaches bottle. The names mark a practice that moves between production and expression, with each label carrying a different part of his approach. “Every row we select gets its own care. That painstaking work is what ends up in the glass.” “I think that we have a wine style in Argentina.” Sergio's honors include Gold medal at the Malbec World Competition (2012).
