i. Biography
Coming Up
Whisky blending is an inventory craft before it is a finished-bottle claim: cask selection, sensory memory, and continuity across releases have to be learned inside production. In 1992, Shinji Fukuyo entered that work as a blender at Yamazaki Distillery, where the discipline was built around reading mature whisky, balancing flavor, and understanding how components behave in blend. The Chief Blender role at Suntory carries responsibility for house style as much as for individual expressions. In 2009, Shinji Fukuyo became the Fifth Chief Blender of Suntory, placing his work inside a lineage where consistency, selection, and product development are measured across years of stock. In 2014, the role expanded into Executive Officer and Chief Blender of Suntory Spirits Limited, joining technical blending responsibility with broader oversight of Suntory’s spirits work. “I avoid eating foods with a strong smell such as garlic during the weekdays and Sunday night, while also maintaining my physical conditions by sticking to my regular routine every day and staying healthy.” Shinji has said.
The Current Chapter
Blending at Suntory Spirits Limited remains a daily sensory and inventory practice, with the Executive Officer and Chief Blender responsible for taste consistency, new product development, and the final shape of releases carrying the Suntory name. Shinji Fukuyo holds that role, and his work is associated with Yamazaki Sherry Cask, Hibiki Japanese Harmony, and Hakushu Distillers Reserve. Long-aged blended whisky depends on component management, patience in inventory, and judgment at assembly. Hibiki 40 Years Old, created by Shinji Fukuyo, is one of the oldest blended whiskies produced by The House of Suntory. His daily routine includes nosing hundreds of samples, the kind of repetitive bench work required to maintain house continuity while developing new products.

Standing
Recognition for blending is usually attached to finished liquid, but it also marks the unseen control of stock, consistency, and release decisions. Shinji Fukuyo received the Supreme Champion Spirit award in 2025 and was honored with the title of Master Blender of the Year in 2024.
