i. Biography
Sother Teague’s path to Amor y Amargo runs through the kitchen first: research and technical chef at Good Eats, then educator at New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, where a food-trained mind met the discipline of teaching. That background still shapes the glass in front of him. He learned to think in flavors, then carried that training into bartending, where texture, balance, and restraint became the language of his work.
The Path
Early in their career, Sother worked as research and technical chef at Good Eats, educator at New England Culinary Institute, bartender at Booker and Dax in New York City, and Managing Director at Amor y Amargo in East Village, New York City. Today, Sother is Beverage Director of Amor y Amargo, partner of Coup, and partner of Overthrow Hospitality.
The Work Today
Today he serves as Beverage Director at Amor y Amargo in the East Village, New York City, and his style there is rooted in culinary training and a deep understanding of flavor.
Signature
Sother's signature dishes include Waterproof Watch, Bitter Spring, and Park Avenue and Rye.
In Their Words “I’m known as something of a classicist. I create modern cocktails based on time-tested templates.” “I fell in love with being able to communicate with the guests, even though I still love cooking.”
Acclaim
His recognition rests less on spectacle than on form: modern cocktails built from old structures, and a bar program that prizes bitterness, balance, and precision. Bitter Spring and Park Avenue and Rye show the range of that sensibility, moving from a named recipe with layered ingredients to a commissioned cocktail tied to a major anniversary. Those works, along with his leadership at Amor y Amargo, mark him as a bartender whose influence comes through method as much as invention.
