Geisenheim gave Ulrich Michel the technical base for the job: the sort of training that makes precision and care part of routine rather than intention. That foundation has mattered over the long run at Cisterzienser Weingut Michel, where he has overseen the winery since 1993 as both winemaker and kellermeister. Holding the role of inhaber as well, he has worked with the same estate across decades, building judgment through repetition, observation, and the steady accumulation of know-how that only comes from staying with one site and one system.

Where They Are Now

Site is the governing principle in Michel’s work, and he says it plainly: “It’s indeed the vineyard site that matters.” For him, wine starts with the ground it comes from, not with an idea imposed later. The Wonnegau area is treated here as lived territory rather than abstraction — a landscape whose vineyard sites he knows closely and has learned to read over time. “I’ve got an intimate knowledge of our vineyard sites here in the Wonnegau area, I’m conscious of their strengths, and I know how they want to be treated,” Ulrich Michel says. The line is direct, but it also defines the job: know the sites, understand their differences, and respond accordingly. The work depends on judgment, not formula. Over years in the same place, that kind of attention becomes part of the craft itself.
