Since 1982, Valter Mlecnik has been founder and winemaker of Valter Mlečnik, and the estate has been built through long attention to vineyard and season. The work is less about imposing a style than about reading what the site gives, then letting that character hold. Over time, the shape of the winery has come from a steady hand and a narrow focus: allowing the grapes room to register the conditions of their place.

The Work Today

At the winery in Volčja draga, within Slovenia’s Vipava Valley, Valter Mlecnik continues as founder and winemaker, working with a landscape known for freshness, texture, and lift. The center of the practice is natural wine, with emphasis on the individuality of the grapes and the character of terroir. The method stays pointed: listen to the fruit, the vintage, and the estate’s own rhythm, then work within that frame. That consistency is what gives the wines their identity.

Signature

Valter’s signature dishes include Angel Hereditas Friulano, Mlečnik Sauvignon Blanc, Mlečnik Cuvée Ana, Rebula 2018, and Ana '15. Read together, they show a cellar working with precision and with the expressive range of natural wine. The estate name stays visible in each bottle, and so does the governing idea behind the line: wine is strongest when it remains tied to its origin, its season, and the life that produced it.
