i. Biography
He had been an economist with a bank in Paris, then chose to make wine from the grapes his father was sending to the Tain co-op. It was a pivot that traded spreadsheets for soil, finance for fermentation, and set Yann Chave on a path shaped by place, patience, and the pull of family fruit.
The Climb
Early in Yann Chave’s career, he worked as economist with a bank in Paris until 1996. In 1996, he turned to wine, becoming owner and producer of wines of Domaine Yann Chave; today, he is also president of Appellation Crozes-Hermitage. The move was not merely a change of profession but a change of scale and rhythm: from the ordered cadence of the bank to the slower, more elemental intelligence of the vineyard. Under Domaine Yann Chave, his work took root in the textures and contours of the northern Rhône, where the distinctions between parcels, stones, and exposures are never abstract for long.
Today
He owns and produces wines at the domaine, with his focus centered on Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage wines. The emphasis is on precision and place, on drawing character from two appellations that ask for attentiveness rather than display. The domaine’s identity is bound to the landscape as much as to the cellar, and Chave’s role places him at the meeting point of both.
Signature
Yann's signature dishes include Le Rouvre, Yann Chave Hermitage Rouge, Yann Chave Crozes Hermitage Rouge, Crozes-Hermitage 2021 White, and Le Rouvre 2018. The list reads like a snapshot of the domaine’s range: reds and whites, appellation and cuvée, youthful expression and bottle age, each name carrying its own register and mood. Together they suggest a producer working across the full spectrum of his territory, attentive to nuance and to the distinct voice of each wine.
In Their Words “On the terraces of Les Chassis, the ancient bed of the Rhône has deposited rolled pebbles that mark the identity of this emblematic land of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation.” “We love whites from Burgundy and look for this signature in our Crozes-Hermitage.”
Recognition
The style note is plain in his own words: "We love whites from Burgundy and look for this signature in our Crozes-Hermitage." It is a concise declaration of taste and direction, suggesting an ideal of brightness, tension, and refinement in the glass. He has also described the place itself: "On the terraces of Les Chassis, the ancient bed of the Rhône has deposited rolled pebbles that mark the identity of this emblematic land of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation." In that sentence, the terrain comes alive as a layered archive of river and stone, a physical foundation for the wines he now makes. Together, the two statements define a winemaker who listens closely—to style, to soil, and to the meeting of the two.
