That musical background did not disappear when he moved into cooking; it changed form. Today, Youji is the chef of Youji's #WashokuRenaissance, carrying composition into a kitchen practice shaped by tradition and updated through his own point of view.

At Oishii Boston (Boston), Iwakura served as Executive Chef, a role that asks for control, consistency, and a clear sense of the restaurant’s identity. The work is exacting by design, and the house style depends on detail held at a high standard. In Their Words “In 1997, after my father fell seriously ill, my mother carried the restaurant forward on her own for the next 40 years.” “Our restaurant began in Japan as a family business, started by my father and mother.” These lines place Iwakura’s work inside a family business with roots in Japan and a history shaped by continuity under pressure. The restaurant’s passage through illness, labor, and responsibility is part of the context behind his present role.
