Zak Miller

A cellar job at Saintsbury Vineyards in Napa Valley, California gave Zak Miller his first practical grounding in wine after studies at Virginia Tech University. That early work, close to the cellar floor and its repeated tasks, established the habits that still define the job: patience, precision, and a working knowledge of how the quiet parts of winemaking shape what ends up in glass. Since 2008, Miller has been winemaker at Domaine Carneros, where the role shifts from cellar labor to estate-level decision-making without losing its dependence on the same disciplined basics.

Sparkling wine work follows a compressed calendar, and Miller has described that schedule plainly: harvest comes earlier, usually in August; blending follows immediately after picking; bottling waits until spring. The sequence is straightforward, but it points to the kind of control the category demands, where timing, restraint, and consistency matter as much as technical execution. In that framework, time is not background but part of the method.
