Blending follows picking without much pause. Zak Miller, winemaker at Domaine Carneros in Napa, works inside that compressed calendar, where sparkling wine asks for decisions before the rest of the valley has fully settled into harvest. His first practical grounding came in a cellar job at Saintsbury Vineyards in Napa Valley, after studies at Virginia Tech University, and the habits of that floor still read in the way he describes the work: patience, precision, and attention to the small element that can undo months of care. Since 2008, Miller has held the winemaker post at Domaine Carneros, moving from cellar labor to estate decision-making without leaving the discipline of repeated tasks behind. The house is an estate grower-producer in the Carneros AVA, with 400+ acres across six vineyards, and that scale gives the cellar both continuity and obligation. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sit at the center of the sparkling program, with Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc also part of the estate vocabulary. The lineage stated here is practical rather than ornamental: university study, cellar work, then years at the same house, inside the timing and restraint of méthode traditionnelle.

August fruit, spring bottle

Miller has put the sequence plainly: for sparkling wine, harvest comes earlier, usually in August; blending follows immediately after harvest; bottling waits until spring. Those intervals are not decoration. They are the working architecture of the program, fixing acidity, base-wine character, and house style before time in bottle begins its slower labor. Domaine Carneros is known for méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines drawn from estate Carneros vineyards, and the method rewards control at each pass rather than a single theatrical intervention. The grapes arrive from a cool-climate appellation suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but the cellar still has to make each cut. Blending, in this context, is not a flourish at the end. It is one of the earliest acts of composition, done close to harvest, while the fruit still carries the season’s first shape. A château above the vines

The cellar’s quiet has a different surface upstairs. Domaine Carneros sits as a château-style landmark modeled after Château de la Marquetterie in France, with a grand staircase, a Louis XV-style salon, a glass conservatory, and a terrace looking over rolling vineyards and hills. The room is composed rather than loud: fires in the salon, light through the conservatory, the back-and-forth of tasting flights and paired tastings set against estate rows outside the glass.
