Spyros Papandreou reads the fruit for freshness as winemaker at Acra Winery in Nemea, Greece, where the cellar work turns on timing and structure. The role is also oenological, so his hand sits at the point where analysis meets the older patience of the bench: when to move, when to wait, how much shape a wine can take before the site begins to blur. Spyros Papandreou works in the Nemean appellation after an earlier post as winemaker at Hatzidakis Wines on Santorini, a shift between two Greek wine languages with different pressures on the grape. Santorini gave him volcanic ground and maritime conditions to read. Nemea gives him Agiorgitiko and a Peloponnesian frame, with the winery acting as the place where fruit, method, and regional identity meet. Acra Winery was founded in 2021, and its youth matters here. There is less inherited script to perform, more room for a winemaker to set the house grammar through repeated cellar choices. Papandreou’s current work is described less by display than by the daily mechanics of winemaking, the decisions that hold freshness, build structure, and keep identity from becoming a label word.

Agiorgitiko beside Assyrtiko and Malbec

The program at Acra is organic and small in scale, focused on still red, still white, and still rosé wines from Agiorgitiko, Assyrtiko, and Malbec. That span gives Papandreou a practical range rather than a decorative one. Agiorgitiko anchors the work to Nemea. Assyrtiko carries a line back toward the island wine language attached to Santorini, where he previously worked. Malbec extends the cellar vocabulary outward, asking for another reading of ripeness, structure, and extraction. His named signature wines include Nemea, Kydonitsa, Malbec, and Assyrtiko, a group that places regional identity next to varietal expression without forcing them into one register. In that mix, Papandreou’s task is not simply to make a range. It is to keep each wine legible, so Nemea remains Nemea and Assyrtiko does not lose its line.

A quiet cellar among the vines

The setting is a vineyard estate in Nemea, rustic and scenic, with the quiet of a small winery rather than the noise of a large hospitality room. The cellar and tasting room sit within that vineyard context, so the work does not feel separated from the ground that supplies its subject. Estate tastings take place in an intimate atmosphere, close enough to the winemaking program that the glass reads as part of the same discipline as the tank, the barrel, and the bench-side decision. Nothing in the room needs to announce scale. The smallness is the point: fewer gestures, closer attention, and a direct line from Papandreou’s choices to the wines poured from the current Acra range. For now, the clearest next chapter is the continued settling of a young organic house founded in 2021 around Nemea, Kydonitsa, Malbec, and Assyrtiko.
