Keeping the question at the bench

Keeping her head down is how Maggie Harrison describes the early discipline. As winemaker at Antica Terra in Amity, she brings that practice into a cellar set inside the Eola-Amity Hills AVA, where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay carry the house’s focus. Harrison worked as first assistant winemaker at Sine Qua Non until 2004, then became head of winemaking at Lillian in California’s Central Coast. She now holds head of winemaking roles at Lillian, Antica Terra, and the Glories, with other creative work moving beside the wine rather than away from it.

Her stated working question, “What’s the most beautiful thing I can do in this moment?”, belongs to the method more than the wall. At Antica Terra, that means the decision in front of the hands: what to leave alone, what to press, what to hold back, how much shape a wine can bear before it loses its own line. The estate works from a biodynamic philosophy, and the scale stays small, fewer than 3,000 cases annually. The numbers matter because they keep the work close enough for judgment to remain personal.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under restraint

The program centers on still red and still white wine, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as the named varietals. That format asks for humility from the cellar. A wine has to stand in conversation, not simply in sequence.

Reserve tastings and comparative tastings make the barrel room part of the discipline. Seasonal small plates accompany the pours, not as ornament, but as another measure of proportion. A bite can pull fruit forward, sharpen acidity, soften tannin, or expose weight. In that setting, Harrison’s background reads less like biography than calibration. The house’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are not presented as isolated objects; they are placed in a wider grammar of texture, aroma, and finish.

The barrel room holds the pace

The room is quiet enough for small changes to register. Barrels sit with dim light around them; tiny white lights, candles, and backlit wine collections give the cellar a low, enclosed glow. It is an intimate room rather than a grand one, and that suits the comparative pour. The glass returns to the table. The plate arrives. The conversation narrows.

Outside the cellar, Antica Terra sits on a 188-acre biodynamic vineyard with oak woodland, gardens, and seasonal waterways. The setting gives the place a larger body than the room first suggests, with cultivated ground and wild edges held in the same frame. Inside, the tasting keeps pulling attention back to the bench-side work: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, the poured comparison, the small plate, the next adjustment of the hand. If the next movement here is not announced in advance, the present one is clear enough: Harrison is still shaping Antica Terra through Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the barrel room.
