Cabernet sets the terms for Richard Arrowood, Director of Winemaking at Arrowood Vineyards & Winery in Glen Ellen, before the cellar turns to Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Malbec, Viognier, Riesling, or Rosé. The work sits on a hilltop estate above Sonoma Valley, with the Cabernet Sauvignon program drawing across multiple acclaimed AVAs rather than resting on a single house shorthand. Arrowood’s route to that station was built in sequence: University of California, Davis; California State University, Fresno; winemaking roles at Korbel, Italian Swiss Colony, and Rodney Strong; then the first winemaker post at Chateau St. Jean from 1974. In 1985, he founded Arrowood Winery, bringing the discipline of those rooms into a winery carrying his name. Since 2000, he has also been founder of Amapola Creek Winery, a later chapter that runs beside the Glen Ellen directorship rather than away from it. At this estate, the title is not decorative. Director of Winemaking means present decisions, vintage by vintage, under a name already weighted with history.

A cellar program built around site

The place works in still red, still white, and still rosé, with sustainable farming named as the production philosophy and organic sourcing among the estate’s signals. Its scale is small to mid-sized, with quality given precedence over volume since 1986. That phrase matters because the portfolio itself asks for a slower read: Cabernet Sauvignon carries the signature program, but Arrowood’s known wines also include Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon, Robert Young Vineyard Chardonnay, Monte Rosso Vineyard Zinfandel, Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and Joseph Belli Vineyards Chardonnay. Each name points to a different kind of decision, whether varietal, estate, or vineyard designation. Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon received a 100-point score in 1999, a number attached to one wine, not a blanket laid over the estate.

Light across the tasting room

The room keeps the cellar close without making a performance of it. Natural light comes through expansive windows, the vineyards falling away from the hillside, and the main tasting room holds a fireplace rather than a theatrical stage set. Outside, a covered patio and rocking chairs make the eastern slope legible: rows, sky, the length of Sonoma Valley, the slower pace of a property built for looking as much as tasting. That matters in a winery where the craft depends on distinctions the glass can lose if the room shouts over them. Library reserve, standard, and premium tastings sit inside that setting, but the point is not the flight format. It is the bench-side attention a visitor can still sense in a Cabernet house shaped by Richard Arrowood.

The name on the bottle

Arrowood’s own line about influence is brief: “Robert Mondavi taught me this many years ago.” The sentence does not explain the lesson, and that restraint suits the place. Glen Ellen holds the through-line here, from the eastern slope and the Sonoma Valley AVA to the Cabernet program that still carries the Arrowood name.
