The fruit is kept scarce by choice. Marco di Serramarrocco, winemaker at Azienda Agricola Barone di Serramarrocco in Fulgatore, has held the work to that line since 2001. His phrase is plain: “I believe that less quantity brings more quality.” At this estate, that is not a decorative motto. It is the organizing pressure behind the vineyard, the cellar, and the portfolio that carries the family name.

Marco’s role began with recovery before it became production. He reclaimed and reorganized a family property whose vineyard history reaches back to the 17th century, then gave the restored ground a working order. The estate now covers about 60 hectares, with 22 hectares planted to high-density vineyards at the foot of Mount Erice. The work stays close to Erice DOP and to western Sicily’s native vocabulary, especially Pignatello and Nero d’Avola, while Grillo, Zibibbo, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon extend the range without moving the center away from the estate.

Twenty-two hectares under pressure

The method begins in the vineyard. High-density planting, low yield, and hand harvest for the Barone di Serramarrocco Pignatello keep the emphasis on concentration rather than volume. The flagship Pignatello comes from Vigna del Capitano and ages for 18 months in barrels; Nero di Serramarrocco is tied to Vigna Sakkara. Those named parcels matter here. They keep the wines from becoming a general expression of Sicily and return them to particular rows of ground.

The cellar sits inside the historic baglio, the old farmhouse structure that holds the practical work of fermentation and aging. Marco’s signature labels, Serramarrocco, Quojane Zibibbo, Baglio di Serramarrocco, San Marcello Pignatello, and Nero d'Avola Bio, read like a map of decisions: native grapes beside selected international varieties, still reds beside whites and dessert wine, barrel work beside the lift of Zibibbo and Grillo. The house lists 6,600 bottles and 360 Magnums for the Pignatello Barone di Serramarrocco, a scale that suits the stated discipline.

The baglio below Mount Erice

The estate sits on Sicilian hillsides in Fulgatore, along the Erice wine road, with vineyards and wooded land around the baglio. From the property the view opens toward the Egadi Islands; inside the cellar, the atmosphere narrows again to barrels, concrete, glass, and the sequence of work. The average altitude of 380 meters brings cooler air than the coastal plain, while sea breeze, sun, clay, limestone, and sand form the conditions Marco works with rather than against.

The tasting room and cellar belong to the same quiet register as the wines. This is not a place built around spectacle. The detail is in the allocation of fruit, the named vineyard, the time in barrel, the choice to let Pignatello and Nero d’Avola carry the estate’s oldest argument.
