A sommelier's hand on the blend

The blend starts as a service decision at Band of Vintners in Napa: Desmond Echavarrie, Master Sommelier and owner, begins with Cabernet Sauvignon before the softer cut of Merlot and the aromatic lift of Cabernet Franc. His route ran through Northern Arizona University, then the sommelier stations at The Bellagio Resort and Wynn Las Vegas in Las Vegas, and The French Laundry in Yountville. Later came the trade side, first as Senior Wine Advisor at Soutirage, then director of sales at Realm Cellars. At Band of Vintners, that history matters because the project is not built like a single-estate inheritance. It is a collective Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon project made by a group of seven wine insiders, shaped around access, selection, and the discipline of knowing what a bottle has to do when it reaches the table. Echavarrie also owns and leads Scale Wine Group in St. Helena, work that keeps him close to boutique producers and the national buyers who decide whether a wine earns a place in a program.

Seventy-eight percent Cabernet Sauvignon

The current craft signature is direct: Band of Vintners Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2023 is built on 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and Cabernet Franc in support. The house works in the Napa Valley AVA and focuses on still red wine, with Cabernet Sauvignon carrying the frame. The wine sits at 14.5% ABV, a figure that places ripeness, structure, and ease of service in the same glass. Published notes for the 2023 Cabernet move through black currant, boysenberry, dark cherry, Herbs de Provence, grilled meats, and light oak. Those are not decorative descriptors here; they point to the brief. Band of Vintners was created to make Napa Cabernet that stays within reach while keeping the seriousness of the appellation intact. The method is collaborative rather than dynastic. The wine is produced across three production facilities in the valley, a practical structure that lets the group work with different sites and cellar conditions without asking the project to pretend it is an estate.

A quiet Napa cellar without estate theater

The room around this work is best understood by what it leaves out. Band of Vintners is small in scale, quiet in register, and not organized around a grand house narrative. The center of gravity is the blend, the allocation, the buyers who know the difference between a label made for noise and a bottle made for the list. In that sense, Echavarrie's sommelier training remains visible. A wine has to pour well by the glass, sit cleanly beside food, and make its case without a lecture. The project's intimacy comes from that restraint. Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine its spine; Merlot and Cabernet Franc make the edges more usable at the table.

The bottle that carries the argument

For now, the work gathers around a named release rather than a broad portfolio. Desmond Echavarrie's signature here is attached to Band of Vintners and the 2021 Band of Vintners Cabernet Sauvignon, while the 2023 Napa Valley Cabernet shows the same collective idea in a newer bottle. Band of Vintners asks Napa Cabernet to travel through service, sales, and the cellar without losing the shape of Cabernet Sauvignon.
