Questions before habit

Questions come before habit in the cellar. At Barmah Park Wines in Vic Moorooduc, Richard McIntyre works as winemaker, bringing a habit of inquiry to a small Mornington Peninsula estate on Moorooduc Highway. He describes the method plainly: “Rather than just following instructions or traditions, I have asked some interesting questions and done some interesting trials.” That stance matters here because the property is young by regional measure, opened in 2000, with its first Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir vines planted in 2001. McIntyre’s career has included owner and winemaker at Moorooduc Estate, but the work at this address belongs to Barmah Park: estate fruit, cool-climate structure, and a cellar practice that leaves room for trial. His own account of the discipline is scientific rather than theatrical. “That’s a legacy, I think, of having had a scientific education.” In the glass, that means decisions made at the bench before they become a house style.

Estate fruit on 2.8 hectares

The scale is tight enough for the hands to matter. Barmah Park works from 2.8 hectares of vineyard and produces around 5000 dozen wines annually, a small boutique output for a property that also carries a cellar door and restaurant. The estate’s varieties include Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay, with still red, still white and sparkling wines in the program. The vineyard has been described as farmed with sustainable practices using only organic sprays, and its fruit is treated as the point of origin rather than a commodity to be corrected later. The Mornington Peninsula gives the cellar its frame: cool-climate acidity, red-fruited Pinot, white wines held for freshness, and blends that keep their shape at the table. The house pours guided tastings of nine estate wines, so the program is not abstract. It is built to be read across a flight, label by label, as much as bottle by bottle.

The cellar door above the vines

The room keeps close to the vineyard. Barmah Park’s cellar door is rustic in feel, set within a boutique estate where the restaurant looks back over the rows and the wider Peninsula landscape. There is polish, but it is not stiff. The restaurant gives the wines a second pass, pairing estate bottles with modern Australian cooking and holding the view as part of the working texture rather than as decoration. From the counter, the place reads as a compact system: vineyard, cellar, tasting room, kitchen. Each part has to answer to the same fruit.

A young estate with its own measure

Barmah Park carries a Chef’s Hat, and the restaurant received its first Chef’s Hat in 2022. Awards are not the useful grammar of the place, but they mark how quickly this former rural property has been taken seriously as both winery and table. The estate itself is a small vineyard on Moorooduc Highway, with a cellar shaped by questions and a flight of nine wines that returns the conversation to Barmah Park fruit.
