Cellar discipline in Grezzana

Corvina and Rondinella set the working rhythm for Cristian Ridolfi, winemaker at Bertani in Grezzana. He works inside a house founded in 1857 at the foot of the Lessini mountains, where Valpolicella Valpantena gives the cellar its frame: a pre-alpine valley, ferruginous marl, clay-limestone soils, and a red-wine tradition built on patience rather than speed. Ridolfi’s own formation began at the Agricultural Institute of Conegliano, then moved through production at Bertani before widening into estate responsibility. His work here is tied to Amarone, and to the range of labels attached to the house, including Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Amarone della Valpolicella DOC, Amarone della Valpolicella Valpantena Villa Arvedi, Secco-Bertani Valpolicella Valpantena, and Proemio. The line is not just varietal. It is managerial, agricultural, and cellar-bound, with decisions made across fruit, timing, extraction, ageing, and release.

Two hundred hectares and the long cellar

Bertani works at large scale, with approximately 2,000,000 bottles annually from 200 hectares, yet its grammar remains rooted in the denominations and grapes of the Veronese hills. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara, and Garganega carry the program, with Valpolicella Valpantena DOCG as the principal appellation named here. The production philosophy is conventional, which matters because the discipline of the place sits in control rather than in rusticity for its own sake: fruit selection, cellar order, barrel management, and the long patience that Amarone demands. The house is known as a pioneer of Amarone della Valpolicella, and that reputation depends on continuity as much as invention. A library holding thousands of aged bottles reaches back to 1939, giving the cellar a working memory. Vintages remain present as material evidence, not decoration.

Among barrels and library bottles

The cellar keeps its voice low. Aged wooden barrels, historic rooms, and the quiet of a traditional estate shape the tasting room before a glass is poured. The room reads as Veronese rather than theatrical: elegant, rustic, and governed by use. The setting does some of the work. Outside, the estate sits in a pre-alpine valley below the Lessini mountains; inside, the cellar gathers that landscape into darker air, wood, stone, glass, and time. This is a medium-capacity house rather than an intimate farm address, but the scale does not erase the bench-side facts. Someone still has to decide when the wine is ready to move, when a vintage has settled, and what a bottle from the library can teach the current release.

A house measured by its archive

Bertani keeps an archive and the wines are still attached to Ridolfi’s working imprint. His career later moved into leadership at Cantina Santi, including a Director role in 2024, yet Bertani remains the address where his Amarone work is legible through named bottles. The 1939 library bottles make Bertani’s patience visible.
