Four decades in one cellar

Oak staves come before the bottle in Bruno Martin’s work as winemaker at Biovin Martin in Ligerz Am Bielersee. Bruno Martin learned barrel making before he took charge of the vineyard, and that hand still matters in a cellar where the barrels are self-built rather than bought as neutral furniture. His post here has held since 1982, with ownership and winemaking carried by the same person at the same address. The estate itself sits in Ligerz am Bielersee, in the Bielersee / Lac de Bienne appellation, where a winegrower’s farmhouse from 1619 remains the house around the work. Martin’s formal vocabulary is also of the trade: Eidg. Dipl. Winzermeister and Küffer sit beside the longer credential, time on the tools. The family line runs through his grandparents, who moved the holding in 1958 from mixed farming into a self-pressing vineyard. Martin took that inheritance toward organic viticulture, then kept the cellar close to the vines.

Eight hectares under the Bud

The vineyard is small enough to read by parcel and large enough to ask for discipline: 8 hectares, converted in 1990 to Bio-Suisse Knospe certification. Biovin Martin sells only self-produced grapes and wines, so the chain from pruning to pressing stays inside the estate. The work favors gentle processing, restraint with additions, and strict drift controls; if grapes have been touched by contamination from outside the organic system, Martin separates those batches rather than folding them back into the cellar. Disease-resistant varieties are part of the program, not as novelty but as a farming decision that reduces pressure in the rows and suits the organic method. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir remain part of the place’s public face, while Le Blanc de Vincent brings Seyval Blanc, Johanniter, and Bianca into a white wine shaped for freshness. Aging in self-built oak barrels links the vineyard to Martin’s first craft, with cooperage treated as part of the winemaking rather than a separate purchase.

The farmhouse above Lake Biel

The cellar and tasting room belong to the old farmhouse, not to a staged idea of one. Stone, timber, and low-key family use give the room its scale; the lake sits below, the vines around it, and the village keeps the work close to its agricultural source. Tastings here are intimate and guided, with the quiet of a small estate rather than the noise of a tasting circuit. The setting explains part of the wine without over-speaking for it. Lake Biel moderates the site, the Bielersee soils carry freshness into the whites, and the house keeps the maker visible at bench-side distance.
