From assistantship to the cellar head

Milagros Rodriguez tastes where vineyard timing meets tank work as winemaker at Bodega de Sarria S.A. in Puente La Reina, Spain. The gesture suits the job she has held since 2006: technical and winemaking head of an estate whose modern winery dates to 1953, set on a finca along the Camino de Santiago in Navarra DO. Rodriguez arrived with a technical base from the University of La Rioja, then learned the house from the inside as assistant to the Technical Manager from 2001-2006. That apprenticeship matters here because the place asks for continuity. The estate works across 110 ha of vineyards, with Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha and Chardonnay moving from field decisions into a cellar program built for still red, white and rosado wines. Milagros Rodriguez speaks of the work without theater: “making good wine starts in the vineyard.” At Sarría, that is not a slogan pinned to a wall. It is the daily order of operations, from fruit condition to extraction, from barrel choice to the moment a Reserva has kept enough primary fruit to stay fresh.

Navarra fruit, stainless steel and oak

The program at Sarría rests on estate fruit and a broad Navarra register. Garnacha and Tempranillo carry the local line; Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot add structure to red wines; Chardonnay gives the cellar a white wine lane alongside the rosado work. The house works with traditional fermentation practice and modern control, particularly stainless steel for reds where temperature can hold freshness and volatile aroma. For Crianza and Reserva wines, oak is part of the method rather than decoration. The barrel program uses French and American oak, with new and used barrels allowing different levels of imprint according to the wine. Rodriguez’s own range is legible in two bottles tied to her work here: Viñedo Cinco Rosado and Gran Villa Reserva 2016. One points toward freshness and lift. The other depends on patience, barrel time and restraint, the style she has described as softened by oak while retaining enough fruit to drink with ease.

A finca on the Camino

The cellar sits within a rural estate near Puente la Reina, in the hills of the Valdizarbe valley, where the Camino de Santiago gives the place a sense of passage without turning the work into spectacle. The room is quiet by nature. Outside, vineyards carry the scale of the house more plainly than any sign could, 110 ha under Navarra light, with rows that make the winery’s decisions feel practical before they feel romantic. Inside, the tasting room and cellar belong to a classic estate rather than a designed performance. The pace is measured: fruit comes in, tanks are watched, barrels are tasted, and the Reserva waits until the wine has found its line. The estate's craft culminates in Gran Villa Reserva 2016.
