A fourth generation holding the line

The long view sits at the bench before the wine is poured: Miguel A. Torres, winemaker at Bodegas Torres in Vilafranca del Penedès, works as president and Managing Director with the weight of a fourth generation name. He joined the family business in 1962, after oenology study at University of Barcelona in 1957 and University of Dijon in 1959, then returned to University of Montpellier in 1982. That sequence matters here because the house asks for both inheritance and method. Torres took the office in 1991, but the work was never only the office. It meant keeping standards legible across a large estate, holding DO Penedès within an international conversation, and treating the family name as a discipline rather than a label. The winery’s public face is broad, yet the governing gesture is narrow: continuity, repeated until it becomes a way of working.

Ancestral varieties brought back into use

The most concrete sign of that discipline is the recovery program for ancestral grape varieties. Bodegas Torres has pursued nearly 50 varieties over 30 years, with six identified for enological potential and climate resilience. In a cellar known for Garnacha, Cariñena, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, that work changes the frame. Garró, Querol, Gonfaus, Forcada and Pirene are not decorative names on a list; they mark a choice to keep older material in play when the vineyard is under pressure. The production philosophy is sustainable, the sourcing also carries organic practice, and the program is patient. A grape recovered from near disappearance does not become a wine by sentiment. It has to prove itself in the vineyard, in fermentation, in blending, and under the reading of the hands that have stayed with it.

The cellar and the Penedès room

The estate sits in Penedès among extensive vineyards and modern facilities, but the atmosphere remains classic and rustic, quiet enough for the work to set the pace. In the tasting room, the family tradition is not staged as nostalgia; it is present in the order of the place, in the still reds and still whites, in the way Mas La Plana can sit beside the recovery varieties without needing to explain the whole lineage at once. The cellar carries scale, but not haste. That is part of the tension at Bodegas Torres: a recognisable family house operating at large production scale while still asking what an old vine, an old name, or a recovered variety can do next.

Climate work as part of the station

Torres also helped found the International Wineries Climate Association, extending the conversation beyond one estate. That belongs to the same method as the varieties: look closely, keep records, act before the cellar forces the question.
