Francisco Barona has held the winemaker’s post here since 2009, after training in Bordeaux and working in France, the United States, and South Africa. That route gave him a broad technical base, but the discipline at this estate is local and specific. The vines, rather than a house style imposed from outside, provide the frame.

Barona founded the project in 2011 around recovered parcels in Ribera del Duero, with Roa as one of the points of gravity. The work centers on vineyards that had been left behind, then brought back into use through organic farming and close attention to low yields. His role is not only to make the wine once it arrives indoors. He reads the plots, decides what to leave alone, and carries field material into the cellar without sanding away its edge. The old-vine focus is not decorative here. It is the method.

Twenty-eight parcels, planted for restraint

The estate farms 26 hectares across 28 distinct sites in Roa, Anguix, La Aguilera, and Pedrosa de Duero. Many of those parcels were planted between 1908 and 1948, and some vines are more than 100 years old. Tinto Fino sits at the center, but the vineyards keep the older field-blend logic of the region, with Garnacha, Bobal, Albillo, and other varieties present in the same viticultural conversation rather than separated into tidy modern blocks.

That mixture asks for patience at the bench-side of winemaking. Barona works with sustainable and organic viticulture, then keeps the cellar process artisanal and low-intervention. The aim is not to polish Ribera del Duero into softness, but to hold fruit, structure, and site in proportion. Oak appears in the program, including wines such as the Francisco Barona Crianza, but the barrel work is there to support maturity and texture rather than cover the old-vine material. Fincas Las Dueñas Ribera del Duero DO Reserva, 2019, remains the named bottling most closely tied to his signature.

A quiet cellar in Roa

The room at Bodegas y Viñedos Barona has the feel of a small estate rather than a spectacle built for passing traffic. The setting is Ribera del Duero in its working register: vineyard roads, old parcels, a cellar where the conversation returns to soils, vine age, and the decisions that happen before fermentation. The scale is intimate, and the wines carry that scale. Nothing here depends on architectural drama.

Inside, the cellar tasting belongs to the same discipline as the farming. The glass points back to low-yield vines and field blends, not to a script. Barona’s wines ask the visitor to stay with detail: dark fruit, dried herbs, the firmness of Tinto Fino, the quieter lift that comes from old mixed plantings. The estate’s current work still turns around Francisco Barona Crianza and the 2019 Ribera del Duero DO.
