Origin carried to the back bar

A bottle comes to the counter before the glass does. Siscu Martí, winemaker at Vila Viniteca in Barcelona, brings a grower’s sense of origin to a bar built beside one of the city’s deep wine merchants. His work here sits on the trade side of wine, but it is not separated from the vineyard thinking that shaped him at Ca N'Estruc in Esparreguera, where he has been heredero y actual propietario, farmer and winemaker since 1980. That span matters because the decisions he learned there are not decorative ones: what a parcel gives, what a cellar should preserve, what a name on a label is allowed to carry. At Vila Viniteca, the same discipline moves through selection rather than élevage. The bar is attached to the shop, so the act of tasting happens beside the stock itself, with bottles close enough to remind the drinker that a wine program is also a chain of custody. Martí’s known wines, Ca N'Estruc Xarel·lo, Ca N'Estruc Negre, L'Equilibrista, and L'Equilibrista Garnatxa, set the terms for reading his hand here: balance, origin, and control, transferred from estate work into a broader Barcelona room.

More than 8000 bottles within reach

The program’s scale is plain: more than 8000 bottles, held by a merchant whose bar allows tasting without turning the experience into a performance. Proximity, not abundance on its own. Wine moves from shelf to counter with little ceremony, and the bar keeps the food close to the glass: gourmet cheeses, cured meats, the kind of things that ask for acidity, salt, fat, and temperature to be considered together. In that setting, Martí’s grower background gives the list a practical tension. A merchant can range widely; a maker keeps asking what survives the journey from place to pour. Vila Viniteca does not need a cellar door to make that question visible. It has the back bar, the shop wall, and the bottle in hand. The method is selection, but selection here is still a craft, a discipline of saying which origins deserve space and which wines can carry themselves in a small room.

The room beside the shop

The bar at Vila Viniteca stays close and conversational, a compact room in El Born where the counter is never far from the shelves. It reads as a tasting place rather than a stage. Glasses gather beside boards of cheese and cured meats; labels come forward from the merchant side; the pace is set by sampling, not spectacle. The intimacy changes how the program lands. A bottle with distance behind it can be discussed at arm’s length, then poured at the same counter. There is no need to overstate the theatre of the place, because the theatre is the movement between shop and glass. Martí’s presence gives that movement a maker’s pressure, especially when the conversation turns back to Ca N'Estruc Xarel·lo.
