    A tartlet that hides nothing

On a coin-sized plate, the beef tartare tartlet is the hardest thing on the menu at Celeste in Stockholm: pastry that has to stay crisp, a cut that has to stay clean, seasoning with nowhere to hide. Ludwig Tjörnemo and Michael Andersson run the kitchen, and Andersson was named Chef of the Year in 2024. The rest of the seasonal tasting menu works the same way. Reindeer comes with lingonberry sauce, spring lamb with white asparagus and a complex sauce, lobster with tomatoes and Swiss chard for sweetness and acid, and a Nordic seafood platter holds the raw end of the range. Nothing is plated to surprise for its own sake, though the kitchen allows itself the occasional joke, as in the course it calls canned summer, or a charcoal-grilled cream. The menu is set rather than chosen, and it rotates as the Swedish seasons turn, so the timing of a course is as much a decision as its content.

Eight floors up in the Batteriet building

Celeste opened in 2023 on the eighth floor of the Batteriet building in Södermalm, an industrial heritage site turned into a small rooftop dining room, and took a Michelin star in the 2024 guide inside its first year. Restaurateurs Jonas Lagerström and Rachel Wennemo own it. The building is multi-purpose, so the entrance gives nothing away. Arrival is staged from there: guests are taken through an inner courtyard for a greeting and a welcome snack, then led up to tables facing the open kitchen. The sequence slows the room before the first course lands. By the time the pass comes into view the work has already started, with glassware set against a restrained table and flowers kept low enough not to interrupt the sightlines.

Three ways through the same menu

The drinks follow the set-menu logic rather than running beside it: a wine pairing, a craft cocktail route and a non-alcoholic pairing, each built to carry the same nine or ten courses. That changes the station work, because a sauce has to meet more than one kind of glass, and acidity, sweetness, bitterness and temperature all have to stay legible without being flattened for safety. Pacing is the open question. Ten courses inside two and a half hours is a tight run, and a room this quiet notices when it tightens further.

    The room above Södermalm

Floor-to-ceiling windows give the room its height over Stockholm, but the kitchen keeps the attention near the bench. Warm light, quiet service and the small scale make the place feel less like a panorama than a station held in public, and through the open kitchen the team reads young and detail-bound. Celeste is the sister room to the one-star Étoile, and the resemblance sits in the precision rather than the menu. What tends to stay with a guest is not the view but the tartlet, arriving intact from the Celeste pass.
