As winemaker at Château Maurac in Saint Seurin De Cadourne, Nicolas Gaudin works from a sequence that keeps each parcel legible before the final assembly. The estate sits in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, between Haut-Médoc and Saint-Estèphe, with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon on a family vineyard of 15 hectares divided across 23 plots. Claude Gaudin bought the property in 1998, and Nicolas now helps carry that stewardship in the cellar and among the rows, not as inherited theatre, but as daily sorting, tasting, waiting, and deciding. The house’s modern lineage is still close enough to name plainly: Claude Gaudin at the purchase, Nicolas Gaudin at the wine, and Patrick Leroy within the current ownership of the estate. The work suits a small property. It asks for attention before scale, and for a winemaker willing to let the separate pieces remain separate long enough to show what they are. At Maurac, the method is not to flatten those differences early. The parcel comes first. The blend follows.

Old vines, younger energy, one assembly

The vineyard gives Gaudin more than one register to work with. The average vine age is about 35 years, with some plots nearing 70 years old and others around 20 years old. That spread matters at the bench-side of winemaking: older vines bring depth and structure, while younger parcels can keep lift in the fruit. Château Maurac treats those differences as material, bottling by parcel before bringing the lots together at the end. The estate works within Haut-Médoc AOC, with still red wines built principally from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Its gravel soils, the graves garonnaises of this part of the Médoc, help drain water and hold warmth, giving the fruit time to ripen in an oceanic climate. In the cellar, the reported frame is traditional vinification, thermoregulated tanks, maceration of 3 to 5 weeks, and élevage of 15 to 18 months in tanks and barrels, with about 30% new oak. Those numbers do not make the wine. They show the discipline around it.

A quiet chai between two names

The place keeps a low voice. Château Maurac is a hidden family-run estate rather than a château arranged for spectacle, its center of gravity split between vineyard and chai, with the tasting room serving the work rather than distracting from it. The atmosphere is quiet, almost confidential, which suits wines described through racé line and aromatic restraint. In a small group tasting, the estate’s scale reads through proximity: the parcels, the vats, the cellar, the cuvées. Les Jumelles is the cuvée to follow here, not because it stands apart from the method, but because it carries the same plot-by-plot attention into a named bottle. Its inclusion in the FFA x AOC Médoc & Haut-Médoc box gave it a wider platform while leaving its point of origin unchanged. End where Gaudin does, with the parcels made legible before Les Jumelles reaches the blend.
